Kirsten Dunst Wonders Whether "We Need" Spider-Man 4

While Kirsten Dunst seems open to reprising her role as Mary Jane Watson, she also seems split on whether Spider-Man 4 is even necessary. The actress, who’s promoting the Alex Garland-helmed Civil War, expressed her conflicted feelings recently in an IndieWire interview.

Dunst admitted that “she can’t tell either” if she is really game for Spider-Man 4 or just a new entry in the web-slinging series altogether. In fact, this led her to questioning: “Honestly, do we need it?”

That said, Dunst does float that what story a new Spider-Man tells could possibly be the ultimate deciding factor in her participation. “It would really depend on the script, and also, I don’t know, you’re really putting yourself out there in a way that … let’s maybe leave things when they were good,” Dunst said. “You know what I mean?”

However, the actress–who played MJ in the original Spider-Man trilogy from 2002-07–has previously been more straightforward about her interest in returning to the franchise. In fact, earlier this month, Dunst said she would have appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home, but no one asked her. This comes after Dunst mentioned she would make another superhero movie “because you get paid a lot of money.”

Speaking of money, Dunst opened up about making less money on Spider-Man 2 compared to her co-star, Tobey Maguire. The actor reportedly hauled in over $17 million for the sequel, while Dunst said her pay was “a lot different.”

Since the original Spider-Man trilogy, there have been five other Spider-Man movies featuring two different Peter Parkers. Andrew Garfield starred in the Amazing Spider-Man series, while Tom Holland currently serves as the web-slinger in the MCU version of the superhero. Dunst admitted that she hasn’t seen any of these newer Spider-Man films.

While there have been Spider-Man 4 rumors, director Sam Raimi cleared them up at the beginning of this month. He said he’s “not actually working on it” at this time.
